Frequently Asked Rodenticider Questions

What is a Rodenticider?

A Rodenticider is a police officer from the Inner Earth who hunts and fights criminal rodents -- rats specifically.

How did you come up with the idea? Why rats?

I’ve always loved creature books and movies -- since I was about 10 years old -- and everyone around me always had to tolerate my love of the old black and white monster movies and any horror novel with teeth on the front cover! Some years ago, a friend of mine, who worked in pest control used to tell me stories about the different pests he’d dealt with. Initially, I’d thought about writing a story about insect pests, but when a local pest control company allowed me to tag along to see pests in action, I was mesmerized by the rat and how it acted in the wild. I was hooked on rats.

Additionally, most people not only do not have an understanding of the rat, but actually have a phobia that keeps them as far away from one as possible. I’ve played on that fear, but have suggested that possibly there are more positive traits than realized. The fact is, in real life, people breed rats for pets. And they make good pets! Many say better then cats! They are intelligent, affectionate and generally great little creatures when domesticated. Those in the wild only practice life survival -- just like any other wild animal. A lot of the current fears draws from the days of the Plague.

Are the rats in your book all bad guys?

This is a classic story of man (and woman) (and animal) against nature, good against evil. There are good rats and bad ones!

How realistic is their behavior in this book?

I’ve tried to remain as true as possible to normal behaviors -- aside from giving them abilities that are beyond the norm -- like their communication and thinking processes.

Of Special Note to Rodenticider Fans

It has been asked by many potential readers:  Is Rodenticider appropriate for my teen/pre-teen to read?

The answer is YES! This book is fine for young adults -- no cursing or sex (though an overshadow of romance can be found), and the violence is not unreasonable or graphic.  Think of some of the old-time movies where the big ant gets the innocent bystander.  That's typical of the limited violence in this book.  This is a fun story!

Will there be a sequel?

There could be -- I've left that possibility open. It would depend upon how well-received the first book is.
